Just a reminder that all SCDSB Schools follow the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit and Canadian Pediatric Society's guidelines for extreme temperatures and keep children indoors if the temperature falls below -25 degrees or -28 with windchill.
On most days, students spend a minimum of 20 minutes, 2x/day outdoors. Schools use their professional judgment when implementing cold weather strategies when temperatures outside have reached or are nearing extreme limits. These strategies may include:
-scheduling indoor recesses;
-shortening recess; and/or
-providing opportunities for students to come indoors to warm up.
The following are recommendations for outdoor play in conditions of cold weather:
-wear layer of loose fitting clothing;
-dress warmly and cover exposed skin;
-wear a hat and mittens;
-send your child with extra socks and mittens in case they get wet;
-keep moving (make snow angels and build snow people), limit time sitting.
