Volunteers are an important part of what makes our school a great place to learn and grow. We value and appreciate the support of our volunteers. There are many opportunities available, including food programs (milk, pizza, snack programs etc.), reading help, kiss & ride, assisting with driving to and from athletics, attending field trips and much more. Everyone who volunteers in a school must have a criminal record check, which includes a Vulnerable Sector Screening. Please call or visit the school office for more information about opportunities available or if you’d like to volunteer!

Current volunteers who do not submit an Annual Offence Declaration for Volunteers on or before December 31, 2017, will be deleted from the database on January 1, 2018, and will have to submit a new Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Screen. Prior to commencing volunteering, volunteers must also complete an orientiation session.  We have upcoming sessions on Monday September 18th at 9:30am and Wednesday September 20th at 2:30 pm.

Please note that, to ensure equity in supports, aside from field trips and special events, parent volunteers will not automatically be placed in their own child's class.  The school will work with volunteers to determine their strengths and interests and where those best match the needs within the school.

We know that not all parents are available during the day.  If you work during the day but would like to be involved, we encourage you to consider participating in School Council.  School councils are groups of parents, community representatives, teaching and non-teaching employees, students and the school principal.  Involvement in school council is a meaningful, hands-on way to have a direct, positive impact on your child’s educational experience. Research shows that when parents are involved in their child’s education, the level of student achievement increases.   Most of the HMES school council meetings occur at 6pm on the first Monday of each month.  Please consider attending our first meeting on Monday September 25th. Additionally, every year, we look to fill a number of roles on council, if you would like to volunteer or want more information, please call to inquire or to request a nomination form from the office.

Please see the office for more information or if you have questions about volunteering in our school.
